Maxtor Basics 1TB USB Hard Drive

December 8, 2008 - 11:08 pm

When I moved over to my mac I had to get all my music, films and tv series over from my PC
The easiest way I found was to take my 2 x 320gb maxtor sata hard drives and put them into USB cases – turning them into external hard drives

This worked well but 6 months down the line I find my videos drive is pretty much full – what with seasons of lost, heroes and of course macgyver! ;)

I’ve been off work ill today so been working from home and was getting quite annoyed with having no storage space

So at lunch time I headed off to the local PC World store (shock, I know, but some of their stuff is actually pretty cheap these days!) and picked up a Maxtor Basics 1tb Drive

The idea is I can move the 320gb of videos onto it, and my 70gb of music. Which will leave my old drives as backups (which I really need to start doing more of)

This will also leave me another 500gb of space for movies.
Side-tracking slightly but I also bought myself an AppleTV as an early christmas present – and its amazing. I’m in the middle of ripping all my DVD’s onto my usb drive so I can watch them through the appleTV :D

As far as hard drives go its pretty boring looking, plain black with a big green led which flashes when you access it

Its very very very quiet though! I’d even say silent 90% of the time. No fans = no noise
It has so far spent 7 straight hours copying mp3 and mp4 files and hasnt skipped a beat

At £102 you cant complain – storage is so cheap these days its almost rude not to have a couple of terabytes on your computer :)

i agee with you. now i’m thinking for having 1TB for my data.

  3. Our Maxtor Basics hard drive was transferring 800gb of data fine and half way through ejected itself and stopped working! Now the green LED flashes every second and no noise at all is heard from the device itself. Looks like I have a faulty one which is going right back to Currys!
